But once she makes herself known by standing up for her friend to the F4, the four most popular, powerful, and rich boys at the school, she gets the red card: F4s way of a Declaration of War.But when she doesnt let herself be beaten by them and is starting to fall for one of the F4, Hanazawa Rui, she starts to see that there is more than meets the eye.
![]() A group of four boys garner a mixture of reverence and fear from students and teachers alike. The boys, DOUMOTO Tsukasa, HANAZAWA Rui, NISHIKADO Soujirou, and MIMISAKA Akira, are childhood friends. Their families influence is so powerful that the boys, led by Tsukasa, bully and terrorize other students that displease him without retribution from the school. Strangely enough, admiring female students dubbed the group Flower 4 or F4 due to their good looks. She has a strong sense of justice as seen when she stood up for a friend against bullies in middle school. Now she sees the injustice in how those with power and wealth can get away with cruel acts, and is frustrated by the reality that one can do little against the privileged. Who hasnt seen something so terribly wrong in the world and felt angry that you can do little to stop it Shes in a dilemma where she can either turn a blind eye, contrary to her principles, and perpetuate F4s reign of terror, or she could stand up to them and become a victim of the terrorizing herself. When Makino finally stands up to F4s bullying, we live vicariously through her. We recognize that standing by your own principles, when you know they are right even when they contradict with strong popular opinion, is something that requires courage. She becomes a target of severe bullying and physical terror. We tend to feel that those who are dissimilar or those who disagree with us as somehow inferior and less deserving of kindness. I applaud Kamio-sensei for making this a theme as bullying seems to be an actual problem in Japanese schools. Its an apt description of our protagonist, for weeds thrive despite harsh conditions. She retaliates against Tsukasa with a kickdown and becomes the first to stand up to his bullying. Her retaliation has the unintended consequence of earning her Tsukasas affections and romantic overtures. Tsukasas advances become an obstacle as she has growing feelings for his best friend, the aloof and enigmatic HANAZAWA Rui. He does not engage in the bullying antics, but passively condones it by not saying anything. Hana Yori Dango Vol 37 Series So EnjoyableWhat makes the series so enjoyable is that the main characters are all so complex with no clear cut good or bad. Makino is a resilient girl with strong principles, but that doesnt mean that she is without self-doubt or vulnerability. When they admiringly and curiously accept Makino into their exclusive circle as a friend of sorts, we began to see more into each boys personality and life story. Tsukasa himself is personally motivated to change for the better.
